Don Bosco, also known as St. John Bosco, was an Italian Catholic priest, educator, and writer who dedicated his life to the well-being and education of young people, particularly the disadvantaged. He was born on August 16, 1815, in Piedmont, Italy, and died on January 31, 1888. He was canonized on April 1, 1934, by Pope Pius XI. He founded the Salesian Congregation, a religious order focused on youth ministry. He was known for his innovative educational methods and his deep love and concern for young people, earning him the title "Father, Teacher, and Friend of the Youth".
In the year 1974, Mr Jeevan Gurung, the son of the Manager of Dak Tea Garden, came to Mirik to meet his maternal grandfather.He also took father Jellici a Don Bosco priest who was born in far western Italy. Father Jellici was so fascinated by the beauty of this place that in his heart he decided to start a Catholic Mission here.That day, Father also met the Manager of Thurbo Tea Garden and he started counting the possibilities of starting a mission in this Mirik Valley.
Father Jellici proposed to Bishop Eric Benjamin, the then Bishop of Darjeeling Diocese, and his Vicar General ,Father Frendagustus to buy land in Mirik.
